The alleyways and hidden warehouses become places where heroes clash with thieves’ guilds and cultists. A fireball is detonated just outside the players’ new HQ, rattling the windows. As a bonus, once the adventure is over, the whole situation is primed to leave each of the four villains alive. There's a problem loading this menu right now. At its conclusion, you should have a handful of players somewhere around level five... and a boatload of ideas for crafting your own take on the next chapter in the history of Waterdeep. And to cap it all off, there is a beautiful fold out map in the back of the book of Waterdeep that is very well crafted. Finally, winter in Waterdeep is extremely harsh. Whatever the reason, the 5th edition of the Player’s Handbook has been locked on the Amazon best-sellers list since it was first published in 2014. While I have played Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and also created DM’s resources, sidequests and more for the adventure, I have never actually sat down and reviewed it.
“Waterdeep Dragon Heist takes D&D back to civilization in an environment which encourages a lot of roleplaying,” according to Chris Perkins, the Lead Designer for the book. “A lot of the inspiration was from things like Ocean’s Eleven and The Italian Job in a city environment. The only truly useable handouts are the Code Legal – a list of crimes and punishments – and a map of the Trollskull Tavern, which characters can acquire. The maps seemed to be a jarring change for some, but honestly, it comes down to personal taste. But years into the release of D&D 5e, I read Tomb of Annihilation and it was that specific adventure where I had the thought that Chris Perkins was fully at the top of his game, having solidified himself as the GOAT-not-named-Gygax. I would have liked to see that depth and color in the book’s included maps. This is amazing.
Read on to find out. Overall, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is light, fast, and filled with quirky characters. You’ve changed the world around you.
Plus more, like toys, the MCU, and Star Wars. Some credit Twitch and YouTube, others the broader “actual play” movement of performative play. Waterdeep: Dragon Heist sets adventurers on the trail of half a million gold pieces, racing against one of four different villains, all the while getting wrapped up in the midst of Waterdeep, the City of Splendors. Where the goal of the adventure is to try and find a trove of treasure and keep it out of the hands of villains.
Plus, the quest concludes in the most wonderful way possible, which is Volo giving the PCs a deed to an old tavern in Waterdeep! Then each encounter is re-jiggered according to the season, giving fresh elements to each of the 10 encounters for the spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. It’s a matter of personal preference and style-of-play, but many DMs find themselves looking for colorized versions of the maps – which is why our DM’s resources feature colorized versions of nearly all the maps in the campaign (you can find some of them for free here!).
Huzzah! Which is good, because if you’re going to survive an encounter with one of the main villains, you’ll need the protection (or at least the promise thereof) of someone just as powerful in order to help you keep your skin. You see, in choosing the season, your gaming group will also choose the campaign’s villain. Instead, it’s like Cannonball Run or the Amazing Race if all the contestants were, you know, wizards.
Waterdeep: Dragon Heist’s accessibility gets a 3.5/5 rating. My personal belief is that Chris Perkins is the greatest living D&D storyteller (respects to the King of the Nerds, Gary Gygax). The DM will have to do some work themselves to fill out Chapter 2, make the factions and villains come alive, and really bring the heist into Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features. Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018. At just 224 pages, it’s the slimmest introductory adventure since 2014’s Hoard Of The Dragon Queen, which felt a little light at just 94 pages. And by and large, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist lets you pull that off. And right at 2nd level at that. – serves as a backdrop to the main story that makes Waterdeep and its inhabitants feel real. As a final note, one of the biggest critiques of the adventure – and rightfully so – is the lack of an actual heist, if you run it as written. Meanwhile, “cold, howling sea winds” forbode the dangers to come. Lastly, there’s the maps. Spring is described as “cold and damp,” while summer is “comfortable” and “a great time for citizens and visitors to congregate outside.” Meanwhile, in the fall the city if filled with produce and commerce thanks to the harvest. In Chapters 5-8, you’ll find every villain written up with their own set of special encounters that can potentially happen–including ones that change the ‘official’ story of what happens down in Waterdeep. But it involves a slew of NPCs and an amount of skill checks that could frustrate even the most patient DMs or the most intrigue-loving players. Another thing that really works well in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is the heavy focus on factions – the Zhentarim, the Harpers, etc. One last caution: this may get the party up to the right level for Dungeon of the Mad Mage, but it is not a lead-in story-wise, so get ready to come up with your own hook if that's important to you as a DM. Kudos to Chris Perkins, the entire D&D team, and for the new designers to D&D, who certainly added freshness and creativity to the book. [Disclosure: Wizards of the Coast sent Nerds on Earth a copy of Dragon Heist in exchange for an honest review.]. This is especially frustrating, because we’re given everything we need for a heist – cool villains and villain lairs, valuable objects, etc. The Newest D&D Adventure: A Review of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, the next book coming from Chris Perkins and the D&D team, have each adventure book double as a fine setting book, clave [dot] jones [at] nerdsonearth [dot] com, jasonsansbury [at] gangsta mail [dot] com, michael [dot] adkins [at] nerdsonearth [dot] com, abram [dot] towle [at] nerdsonearth [dot] com. And that attitude–the idea that you can change the world and make something your own–is going to give so much vibrancy to games. Instead of laying out a plot that strictly leads from A to B to C, the book sets up a number of moving pieces, and whenever event A happens, you could potentially trigger B or C or find something else.

That being said, the book makes a good effort at summarizing the campaign’s setting and story, presenting the campaign’s structure and background (including a flowchart). To be clear, I enjoyed Hoard of the Dragon Queen just fine and I thought Princes of the Apocalypse and Out of the Abyss had many, many moments of greatness. As Banky taught us in Chasing Amy, inkers and colorists aren’t simply tracers, they really add depth and definition to a drawing. While Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is an easy enough adventure to run, it is not the easiest adventure to run well. Now, having just turned the final page of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, I felt like I read a Chris Perkins story so clever and brilliantly done that he has reached the point of confidence in his career that he could set the stage for adventure, then step back and invite a new generation of storytellers to make their mark on the story. Instead of giving players a "big bad" to hunt, they're instead in a race to collect a secret stash of 500,000 dragons, the golden currency of Waterdeep. But, cracking the thing open, I soon discovered that Dragon Heist is perhaps the most cleverly designed adventures in the entire D&D catalog.
This can be something of a challenge for the DM, but it can work really well – and luckily there’s a ton of products featuring more elaborate versions of the sidequests available to DMs on places like dmsguild.com, including our own DM’s resources. Listen, now that you've seen this, I'll tell you that if you like Nerds on Earth, you should give our email list a try. DMs will want to read it for the adventures of Dragon Heist of course, but home brewers will dig it, as it is a nice aid for further adventures in Waterdeep, or even a generic urban-based story that is thunk up. To me, that sounded like too much randomness for an adventure module. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
